At the present one tries with harmonious co-operation to revive the old citycenter. This aspire has lead too the fact that Bergen op Zoom has become a regional trade-centre back again. Research has shown that especially midieval citycenters are pre-eminently atmospheric. The local authorities have adapted to this by constructing shoppingpromenades and a new parkingsystem. With the arrival of the municipal theatre at the "Grote Markt" the cultural-historic western part of the citycenter got even more cachet.


Living, working and well-being are the three pillars high on the list for the expansion Bergen op Zoom. With the opening of the industrial areas we make good business. The motorway between Antwerp and Bergen op Zoom has been opened on march 1, 1993.

On the westside of the city prepectives glimmer in the former basin of the "Westerschelde". Due too the so called "Deltawerken" for the greater part dryed-up and re-arranged. With an internationaly accepted nature reserve ( the lake "Markiezaatsmeer" in the south), recreationlake the "Binnenschelde" (in the north) and the spit of land (the "Bergse Plaat") in between. The motto is not without reason: Bergse Plaat, home at the water. Living at the water belong to the possibilities there. On this spit of land the municipality is allowed to build at least 2900 houses (in the mean time for a good deal already realized). Rental and privat houses for people with either small or big purse. There also is realized a new subtropical swimmingpool, while next of it there is a paddling-pool for small children and also a pool voor windsurfing.
By way of a boulevard this living/recreation area is attainable within a ten minutes walk form the heart of the city. The "Olof Palme" bridge at the entrance of this area ties-in the old city too the area of the "Binnenschelde". With the beautiful citycenter, the woods focust on recreation and the many events this recreation-area forms a gain for tourists, day-trippers and the inhabitants of Bergen op Zoom.
